The Sri Lankan Government has expressed deep concern over footage shared by Israeli Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, which shows the dehumanising treatment of detainees connected to the “Global Sumud Flotilla”.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism said it was engaging with the Israeli Foreign Ministry through diplomatic channels to secure immediate consular access to the affected Sri Lankan national Sameera Mehboobdeen.

The Ministry said discussions were also underway to obtain assurances regarding the individual’s safety, wellbeing, and dignity, while ensuring her swift and safe return to Sri Lanka.

It further stated that the Government remained fully committed to the protection and welfare of Sri Lankan citizens overseas.
