Chief Incumbent of the Atamasthanaya, Anuradhapura, Pallegama Hemarathana Thera, is to resign from his position following widespread public outrage over a child sexual abuse case, Asian Mirror reliably learns.
The 71-year-old chief prelate was arrested earlier this month on suspicion of sexually abusing a 14-year-old minor, alongside the victim’s mother, who was charged with aiding and abetting the alleged offence.
Following his arrest, the senior monk avoided standard detention after being admitted to hospital under police custody, citing sudden health complications. The Anuradhapura Magistrate’s Court subsequently granted bail to both suspects.
The case sparked intense public scrutiny and protests across the island.
Chief Incumbent of the Ruwanweli Maha Seya, Eethalawetunawewe Gnanathillaka Thera, will assume administrative responsibilities and carry out the duties of the Atamasthanaya until the conclusion of the judicial proceedings.
