Former Deputy Minister Sarana Gunawardena was today (9) convicted by the Colombo High Court in four corruption cases filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption over allegations that he caused losses to the State while serving as Chairman of the Development Lotteries Board.
The cases were instituted by the Bribery Commission alleging that Gunawardena abused his position in 2006 by obtaining vehicles for the Development Lotteries Board on a rental basis, resulting in financial losses to the Government.
The verdict was delivered by Colombo High Court Judge Mohamed Mihal after several postponements. The judgments had initially been scheduled to be delivered on 30 April and later on 26 May before being fixed for 9 June.
Further details regarding the sentence are expected to be announced by the court.
