Parliament yesterday (9) approved a motion to refer a report by the Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) on alleged financial irregularities and fraud within the Department of Motor Traffic to the Attorney General for observations and any necessary legal action.

The report contains findings from investigations conducted by COPA into the Department of Motor Traffic during committee meetings held on 10 and 21 March 2025 in the First Session of the Tenth Parliament. The report was tabled in Parliament on 25 July 2025 as Parliamentary Series No. 243.

In accordance with Standing Order 119(4), the report had previously been referred to the Minister of Finance and the subject Minister for their observations. Following the submission of their responses to Parliament, COPA reviewed the matter again on 4 March 2026.

During its deliberations, the committee stressed the need for prompt legal action in relation to the financial irregularities and alleged fraud uncovered within the Department of Motor Traffic.

COPA subsequently decided unanimously to seek Parliament’s approval to refer the report to the Attorney General for further examination and any action deemed necessary.

Parliament approved the motion stating that the report, which details the findings of the committee’s investigations into the Department of Motor Traffic, be referred to the Attorney General for observations and appropriate legal action.

According to Parliament, this is the first time a committee report previously tabled in Parliament has been formally referred to the Attorney General for observations and further legal proceedings.
