Former State Intelligence Service (SIS) Director, retired Major General Suresh Sallay, has suspended his hunger strike following the advice of his legal counsel.
The former intelligence chief was initially arrested on 25 February 2026 by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA). He is being held in connection with the reopened investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks, which killed nearly 280 people.
Sallay launched his fast-unto-death in early June, alleging torture, cruel, and degrading treatment while in the custody of the CID, which is currently led by retired Senior Superintendent of Police Shani Abeysekera. Sallay was transferred to the National Hospital under on 7 June 2026.
