: Four suspects accused of assaulting two technical college students after allegedly demanding Rs. 100 from them have been remanded until July 15 by the Kurunegala Magistrate’s Court.

The suspects, aged 19, 24 and 25, are residents of Gepallawa, Weerambugedara and Uhumiya.

The victims are two 19-year-old students studying at Wayamba Tech Technical College while residing in Bamunugedara, Kurunegala.

According to police, the incident occurred on June 25 when the two students were walking back to their hostel. An argument reportedly broke out between the students and the suspects after the latter allegedly demanded Rs. 100, which escalated into an assault.

The injured students were admitted to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital for treatment.

Police launched an investigation after videos of the assault circulated on social media. Two police teams were subsequently deployed, leading to the arrest of the four suspects on June 30.

The suspects have been charged with attempting to forcibly extort money while acting as members of an unlawful assembly and causing injuries to two persons.

After they were produced before the Kurunegala Magistrate’s Court on July 1, the court ordered that they be remanded until July 15.

Police also produced a TVS motorcycle, allegedly used by the suspects to travel to the scene, as case property. Further investigations are being conducted by the Kurunegala Police.
