Minister of Health and Mass Media, Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, announced today (2 January) that the highest-ever allocation of funds for the health sector will be included in this year’s national budget proposal.
Dr. Jayatissa made the revelation during the inauguration of Sri Lanka’s first and only bone marrow and hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT) unit for children with cancer at the Apeksha Cancer Hospital in Maharagama. The establishment of this unit was made possible through the financial support of the Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya and the labor contribution of the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF).
“The Health Ministry typically receives generous funding from the Treasury, often more than the ‘Kataragama Deviyo,’ but this year, the budget will allocate the largest amount ever for the health sector in the country’s history,” the Minister stated.
Dr. Jayatissa further highlighted the support the Ministry receives from both local and international stakeholders to enhance the sector, noting that developments will be systematically and strategically implemented to ensure the health system’s strengthening.
Additionally, the Minister emphasized that health sector development would no longer be driven by political interests but by a 20-year national plan. He also stressed the importance of aligning local hospital upgrades with national priorities, regardless of political considerations.
