Police Crackdown on Illegal Bus Modifications Sparks Strike Threat

Private bus drivers and conductors have expressed deep frustration over the ongoing Police crackdown on illegal vehicle modifications and the deployment of plainclothes officers inside buses to monitor traffic violations, private bus trade unions said today (5 January).

Union representatives stated that the protests among bus drivers and conductors have escalated to a point where the unions are struggling to control them. They plan to request a meeting with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) in the coming week, warning that failure to receive a favourable response from authorities could lead to severe consequences.

The unions further criticised the Police for inspecting vehicle modifications, even in bus parking areas. They highlighted that many of these modifications were carried out years ago at significant cost, stressing the financial burden drivers now face due to the enforcement measures.
