Four individuals have been arrested and remanded until 17 January for trafficking two sisters from Suchi village, Hambantota, to Oman under the pretense of providing caregiver jobs. Instead, the sisters were sent on tourist visas and forced to work as domestic aides.
One of the suspects is a Samurdhi Development Officer from the area. The younger sister, aged 22, tragically lost her life under suspicious circumstances, while her elder sister endured severe abuse and cruelty.
Authorities are investigating whether the death was a suicide or homicide.
Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) Chairman Koshala Wickramasinghe described the incident as a case of human trafficking and assured that strict action would be taken in accordance with the law.
