Last year, Sri Lanka achieved a remarkable milestone with 7,144 eyes donated through the Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society, providing the invaluable gift of sight to individuals in need.
These donations benefited people in 57 countries, including Yemen, Egypt, Japan, and Korea. The contributions included donations from 3,163 foreigners and 1,475 Sri Lankans.
The cost of facilitating vision restoration through a single donated eye is Rs. 25,000, covering the harvesting, preservation, and transplant procedures. Despite this cost, eye donations remain completely free for those who wish to donate.
Since 1961, over 160,000 individuals have regained their sight through the society’s efforts, while 2,230,000 more have pledged to donate their eyes in the future, demonstrating Sri Lanka’s enduring commitment to helping those suffering from blindness.
In 2024, a total of 1,025 individuals, both foreign and Sri Lankan, received eyelid surgeries through the society.
