Palestinians in Gaza are celebrating after mediators confirmed a ceasefire deal between Hamas and Israel had been reached after 15 months of war. The ceasefire is scheduled to take effect from Sunday, January 19.

Israeli forces continue their attacks across Gaza and at least 30 Palestinians have been killed since the agreement was announced.
Hamas official Izzat al-Rishek said the agreement reached in the Qatari capital Doha met all the Palestinian group’s conditions, including the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces, the return of displaced people to their homes and a permanent end to the war.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked US President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump for helping “move forward” a deal to “end the suffering of dozens of hostages and their families”.
At least 46,707 Palestinians have been killed and 110,265 injured in Israel’s war on Gaza since October 7, 2023. At least 1,139 people were killed and more than 200 were taken into captivity in Israel by Hamas-led attacks that day.
