President of the Women Parliamentarians’ Caucus, Saroja Savithri, highlighted the need to amend Sri Lanka’s various marriage laws to establish a uniform age limit for marriage.

Speaking at a meeting in Parliament, Savithri was joined by the Forum’s Deputy Co-Chairpersons, Chamindrani Kiriella, MP and Attorney-at-Law, and MP Samanmali Gunasinghe.

The MPs agreed to prioritise drafting amendments to harmonise marriage age limits and proposed consulting civil society organisations and relevant stakeholders for comprehensive recommendations.

The members also discussed the importance of amending laws to provide a clear and accurate definition of the term “child.”
