Breaking: Mahinda Rajapaksa Files FR Petition Over Reduced Security

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has submitted a fundamental rights (FR) petition to the Supreme Court, requesting the reinstatement of his reduced security detail.

Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and other Cabinet Ministers have been named as respondents in the case. Rajapaksa argues that the reduction in his security poses risks to his safety and seeks the Court’s intervention to ensure adequate protection.

The petition claims that no armed forces personnel have been assigned to his protection and that his security now relies solely on police officers. Rajapaksa argues that, as the leader who played a key role in ending the nearly three-decade-long war in Sri Lanka, he faces ongoing terrorist threats, as well as direct threats to his life.

Rajapaksa asserts that the arbitrary reduction of his security constitutes a violation of his fundamental human rights. He has requested the court to declare this action unlawful and to issue an order for a comprehensive threat assessment to be conducted.

Additionally, the former President has sought an order to reinstate his full security detail, which he claims has been unfairly withdrawn.
