World Leprosy Day 2025: Breaking Stigma, Embracing Inclusion

World Leprosy Day, observed annually on the last Sunday of January and extending into the following weeks, serves as a global platform to spotlight the battle against leprosy and the pervasive stigma that surrounds it. This day aims to raise awareness, highlight the struggles of those affected, and promote efforts to end discrimination, fostering a future where no one is defined by illness.

Understanding Leprosy

Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease primarily targeting the skin and nerves. While modern medicine has made it fully curable through Multi-Drug Therapy (MDT), its effects linger in society due to the stigma and discrimination faced by those diagnosed. In Sri Lanka, where the disease remains a pressing health issue, thousands live with its impact.

The stigma attached to leprosy often deters individuals from seeking timely testing and treatment, fearing exclusion and ostracism. Delayed medical attention increases the risk of severe complications and permanent disabilities. Beyond physical challenges, the social exclusion and discrimination fostered by prejudice contribute to poor mental health among those affected.

The Role of the Alliance Development Trust

The Alliance Development Trust (ADT), a Sri Lankan non-profit organization established in 2005, works to uplift marginalized communities, including those affected by leprosy. ADT’s initiatives include:

  • Awareness programs to educate the public about leprosy and reduce stigma.
  • House-to-house surveys and screenings to identify cases and ensure early treatment.
  • Self-care groups for individuals with leprosy, offering emotional and social support, and fostering empowerment.
  • Training for external stakeholders to promote inclusivity.

These activities aim to dismantle misconceptions, encourage empathy, and create a supportive environment for those living with leprosy.

Repealing the Lepers Ordinance

One of the significant barriers to inclusivity is Sri Lanka’s Lepers Ordinance, an outdated law that segregates and restricts the rights of individuals affected by leprosy. ADT calls on the government to repeal this ordinance, emphasizing the need to eliminate institutionalized discrimination and build a society grounded in dignity and equality.

The 2025 Call to Action: Unite. Act. Eliminate

Under the theme “Unite. Act. Eliminate,” World Leprosy Day 2025 urges the public to reject misconceptions and extend understanding and support to those affected by leprosy. ADT emphasizes the importance of solidarity in creating a culture of acceptance where every individual can live a meaningful life free from prejudice.
