Booking.com has crowned Sigiriya the world’s most welcoming city for 2025, based on its over 360 million verified customer reviews.

The online travel agency (OTA) named Sigiriya a must-see destination for travelers seeking authentic “unbeatable adventures” shaped by exceptional hospitality and service.

“From conquering the climb to the fortress to embracing the serenity of village life, Sigiriya offers an unforgettable blend of adventure and tranquility,” Booking.com said in its listing.

Located in the heart of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle (in the northern Matale district), Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its 590-foot-tall rock fortress.

Built by King Kassapa (477–495 AD), this ancient site is known as one of the best-preserved examples of urban planning and architecture of its time.

After King Kassapa’s death, Sigiriya became a Buddhist monastery and remained active until the 14th century.

Booking.com encouraged travelers to visit Sigiriya to witness what it described as “the architectural brilliance of ancient Sri Lanka.”

The platform also highlighted the region’s rich cultural offerings, including traditional batik fabrics, handicrafts and ornamental pottery, and handloom textiles.

Additionally, OTA recommended a jeep safari in Minneriya National Park to experience spectacular gatherings of wild elephants.
