According to data from the Sri Lanka Tea Board, Sri Lanka’s national tea sales average for January 2025 increased marginally in rupees but saw a slight decline in dollar terms.
The monthly average was Rs. 1,185.43 (US$ 4.03) per kilogram, an increase of Rs. 0.61 from December 2024 but reflecting a decline of US$ 0.05 due to currency fluctuations.
Among the top tea varieties, the top tea varieties recorded annual gains in both rupees and dollars, averaging Rs. 1,105.66 (US$3.76), down by Rs. 15.43 and US$0.34 from January 2024.
Medium-sized teas showed a mixed performance, declining by Rs. 48.24 from a year ago to Rs. 1,038.05 but increasing by US$0.13 to US$3.53.
Lower-grade teas, which account for the majority of Sri Lanka’s tea exports, fell in both local and dollar terms, down by Rs. 136.39 and US$0.09 to Rs. 1,255.60 (US$4.27).
