New government to present maiden budget today

Budget debate to be held for 26 days from February 18 to March 21
Second reading debate to be held from February 18 to 25
Committee stage debate from February 27 to March 21 – Third reading vote on March 21 at 6.00 pm.

The Second Reading of the Appropriation Bill for the year 2025 (Budget Speech) is scheduled to be presented to Parliament today at 10.30 am by the Hon. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake as the Minister of Finance.

Accordingly, the debate on the Appropriation Bill (Budget Debate) is scheduled to be held from February 18 to March 21, 2025.

The Appropriation Bill for the year 2025 was presented to Parliament for first reading on 9 January 2025.

Accordingly, the second reading debate is scheduled to be held for 7 days from 18 to 25 February. Thereafter, the second reading division on the Bill is scheduled to be held on 25 February at 6.00 pm.

The committee stage debate on the Appropriation Bill is scheduled to be held for 19 days from 27 February to 21 March, which includes 4 Saturdays.

The third reading division on the Appropriation Bill will be held on 21 March at 6.00 pm.

During the budget period, time has been allocated from 9.30 am to 10.00 am for 5 questions for oral answers, and the budget debate will be held from 10.00 am to 10.00 pm.

Furthermore, the time allotted for adjournment motions on all other days except February 25 and March 21, when the polls will be held, is from 6:00 PM to 6:30 PM.
