The Department of Meteorology has issued a ‘red’ warning, cautioning that the heat index—the temperature felt on the human body—will remain at a ‘caution level’ today (19).

Temperatures are expected to rise in the Northern, North Central, North Western, Western, and Southern provinces, as well as in the Ratnapura and Monaragala districts, the statement said.

Specialist Dr. Ananda Wijewickrama warned that the prevailing hot weather could lead to health issues such as dehydration.

Ada Derana reported that Education Ministry Secretary Nalaka Kaluwewa stated that decisions regarding school activities, including inter-house sports events and outdoor activities, will be made based on advice from health experts.

Meanwhile, the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has reported a worsening Air Quality Index (AQI) across the island. Central Environmental Authority (CEA) spokesperson Dr. Ajith Gunawardena confirmed that air pollution increased yesterday (18) and advised individuals experiencing breathing difficulties to seek immediate medical attention.
