Acting IGP Priyantha Weerasuriya today revealed a major security breach inside the courts following the killing of Ganemulla Sanjeewa at the Hulftsdorp Court complex.
Inspecting the court premises after the incident, the IGP stated that the hitman exploited a security lapse, as lawyers entering the court are not subjected to security checks. He noted that the suspect took advantage of this vulnerability to carry out the attack.
Preliminary police investigations have confirmed that a man disguised as a lawyer carried out the shooting, with CCTV footage also identifying the suspect.
IGP Weerasuriya said it is believed the shooting stemmed from disputes between organized criminals and drug lords. He added that steps would be taken to subject lawyers to security checks before entering court premises and that police have requested the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) to cooperate with this measure.
