At the 31st Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, defying predictions and adding further uncertainty to the Oscar race, the papal thriller Conclave won the award for best ensemble, while Timothée Chalamet won best actor for his portrayal of Bob Dylan.
Conclave, Edward Berger’s fictional drama about the election of a new pope, won while Pope Francis was seriously ill, prompting the cast to offer their best wishes. The win was a surprise, as Anora was the leading actress. The win, along with previous successes at the BAFTAs, opened the best picture race.
Chalamet’s win, beating out favorite Adrien Brody, gives the 29-year-old a shot at an Oscar, as he expressed his passion for his role in his acceptance speech. Other SAG Awards highlights included Demi Moore, Zoe Saldana and Kieran Culkin continuing their awards season dominance.
Jane Fonda received a lifetime achievement award for using the stage to advocate for political action, while Colin Farrell won his first SAG Award for The Penguin. Shogun and Only Murders in the Building continued their awards dominance in the television categories.
The ceremony, which was streamed live on Netflix, also paid tribute to SAG-AFTRA members affected by the recent wildfires, and the night’s mix of surprises has raised anticipation for next week’s Academy Awards.
