MP Sugath Wasantha de Silva Makes History with First-Ever Braille Motion in Parliament

In a landmark moment for Sri Lanka’s parliamentary history, National People’s Power (NPP) MP Sugath Wasantha de Dilva yesterday (24) moved the motion to adjourn the House using a note written in Braille—the first instance of its kind.

Addressing Parliament, MP de Silva, who is visually impaired, expressed his pride in reading the motion in Braille, highlighting the importance of inclusivity in governance. He stressed the need for a rights-based welfare empowerment programme to improve the living standards of millions of disabled individuals, advocating for a more inclusive society.

He also called for the introduction of new domestic legislation in line with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Additionally, he urged the government to implement initiatives that recognise and integrate the economic potential of people with disabilities into broader social reforms.
