Infamous soothsayer W.M. Gnanawathi from Anuradhapura, popularly known as ‘Gnanakka,’ received Rs 28 million as compensation for property damages sustained during the riots on 9 May 2022.

The riots erupted after former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s supporters attacked protesting civilians in front of Temple Trees and Galle Face, demanding the resignation of then-President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

This was revealed by Chief Government Whip Nalinda Jayatissa in Parliament this evening (27 February).

Referring to the report of the investigation commission appointed to determine compensation for those whose property was damaged between 9 May and 15 May 2022, Jayatissa stated that W.M. Gnanawathi, residing at 246, Irusupura, Nidahas Mawatha, Anuradhapura, had been paid Rs 28 million.
