The Trump administration has halted U.S. military aid to Ukraine, the White House confirmed Monday, after a heated meeting between President Donald Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Friday’s meeting ended in a public standoff and talks on a planned economic agreement between the two countries abruptly ended.
The move is part of a broader review of U.S. policy toward Ukraine, a White House official said. “The president has made it clear that he is focused on peace,” the official told CBS News, adding that U.S. aid will only continue if it contributes to resolving the conflict.
The policy shift marks a significant shift under Trump, who has blamed Ukraine for prolonging the war. The decision to withhold military aid comes after Trump urged Zelensky to reach a ceasefire with Russia or face cuts.
Despite the $3.85 billion in military aid earmarked for Ukraine, Trump has not made any shipments since taking office in January, but the Biden administration has continued to provide weapons to Ukraine based on previous commitments.
Trump’s stance has drawn backlash from some Republican lawmakers, including Senator Susan Collins, who has expressed strong support for Ukraine. Meanwhile, Zelensky, who traveled to London after the White House meeting, reiterated the importance of Western security guarantees in any peace deal, despite ongoing tensions.
