The Women’s Chamber of Industry and Commerce (WCIC), in collaboration with the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE), recently celebrated the 40th anniversary of WCIC. The bell rang, marking a significant milestone in the journey of empowering women in business.

WCIC, the National Council for Women in Business, was founded in 1985 by a group of visionary and successful women. They envisioned WCIC as a powerful force to empower women entrepreneurs, integrate them into mainstream business activities, and encourage greater economic participation from women across the country. Today, as WCIC celebrates 40 years of participation, enrichment, and empowerment, it continues to be a driving force for women entrepreneurs and professionals in Sri Lanka.

WCIC’s vision is to be a ‘think tank’, a ‘voice’, and a ‘platform’ that empowers women to become powerful nation builders, actively participating in transforming the economic landscape of Sri Lanka.

In her opening remarks, Vindhya Jayasekara, who was appointed as the CEO of CSE, said, “The impact that women-led businesses have on the economy is immense, promoting job creation, innovation and ultimately sustainable economic growth. More diverse and inclusive industries with higher employment rates and more dynamic labor markets can foster economies. Women entrepreneurs are more likely to address specific needs, create solutions that are sometimes overlooked, and have a positive impact on socio-economic development. By supporting their progress, we not only foster individual success, but also strengthen the business environment in the country.

WCIC Chairperson Ms. Gayani de Alwis said: “WCIC marks 40 years today, with its official incorporation date being 5 March 1985. As the world’s first women-owned board, we are celebrating this milestone by ringing the bell to support women-owned and women-led businesses.

To mark this important anniversary, WCIC has planned an exciting series of events, including a walk, membership activities, community outreach and mentorship programs, as well as a unique 40 Under 40 Women Entrepreneurship Development Program.”
