The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has launched an inquiry into allegations that Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa fraudulently obtained his Attorney-at-Law qualification.

The probe was initiated following a complaint lodged by Citizens’ Power Against Bribery and Corruption. The CID’s Special Investigation Unit is examining whether Rajapaksa engaged in fraudulent activities during his Sri Lanka Law College examinations, with investigators scrutinising official records to verify the claims.

After considering the submissions, Colombo Chief Magistrate Tanuja Lakmali directed the CID to present a progress report to the court. The complaint alleges that Rajapaksa unlawfully obtained his law degree with the assistance of two attorneys.

The organisation has urged a formal investigation and appropriate legal action, according to police. In response, the Acting IGP has instructed the CID Director to conduct a thorough probe in accordance with the Code of Criminal Procedure Act.
