Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon has been remanded until the 10th of April by the Matara Magistrate’s Court. This decision was made during the hearing of the related case today (3), before Magistrate Aruna Buddhadasa.

During the proceedings, the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) informed the court that former CCD Director Neville Silva is a suspect in the case regarding the shooting incident near the W15 hotel in Weligama on 31 December 2023.

The CCD also informed the court that investigations will continue into the involvement of former Public Security Minister Tiran Alles in the case.

On 28 February, the Matara Magistrate’s Court issued arrest warrants for Deshabandu Tennakoon and seven others in connection with the shooting incident in Weligama, which resulted in the death of a Colombo Crime Division officer.

After evading capture for 20 days, Deshabandu Tennakoon surrendered to the court on 19 March by way of a motion.
