The Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) recently held a productive meeting with Mr. Toyokazu Nagamune, Regional Representative for South Asia, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan, to explore the potential of establishing a regional economic cluster aimed at facilitating exports of manufactured goods to Japan and other regions. The initiative seeks to enhance economic cooperation between Sri Lanka, India and Japan.
During the discussions, Mr. Nagamune highlighted the opportunities for stronger cooperation in the field of trade and investment, emphasizing Sri Lanka’s strategic location and industrial capabilities. The meeting focused on identifying key sectors for export promotion and exploring strategies to enhance regional supply chains, thereby improving market access for Sri Lankan products.
Mr. Mangala Wijesinghe, Chairman/CEO of EDB, highlighted Sri Lanka’s potential as a strategic hub for trade and investment. He presented the country’s capabilities as a major player in the global market, investment opportunities and its advantageous geographical location.
The discussions reaffirmed the importance of developing strong trade partnerships and advancing export-oriented industrial growth through regional cooperation. Both sides expressed their commitment to further engage in developing trade and investment opportunities between Sri Lanka and Japan.
The meeting was attended by Mr. Hiroki Oi, Resident Representative, JETRO Colombo and Ms. Lakna Wasalage, Senior Research Executive, JETRO Colombo. EDB was represented by Mr. Mangala Wijesinghe, Chairman/CEO, Ms. Anoma Premathilaka, Additional Director General, Development and other EDB officials.
