Negombo Police have launched an investigation into an alleged serious sexual assault on a female patient at the Negombo General Hospital, according to Police Headquarters.

The incident reportedly took place on 31 March when a young woman, accompanied by her mother, visited the hospital for treatment related to a dental issue and a skin condition. During the examination, a doctor allegedly sexually assaulted her. The incident was brought to the attention of the Negombo Police through the hospital’s Director.

The woman was examined by a judicial medical officer on 2 April; however, she expressed dissatisfaction with the findings of the medical report. As a result, the police have arranged for her to be examined by a special medical panel.

In response to the incident, the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) issued a statement acknowledging the seriousness of the allegation. The association clarified that the doctor in question had been expelled from the GMOA in 2021 due to repeated disciplinary violations.

The GMOA has called for a comprehensive and impartial investigation into the incident and urged that the perpetrator be severely punished if found guilty. It also raised concerns about the broader implications of such incidents on public trust in the free healthcare system and underscored the urgent need to ensure safer environments for women.
