The United States announced that China will face new tariffs of up to 245% in retaliation, according to a White House statement late Tuesday.
The White House’s latest administration order, revealed late Tuesday, has initiated a national security investigation into imports of essential resources. The order also included clarifications for the reciprocal tariffs announced on April 2.
“China now faces tariffs of up to 245% on imports to the United States as a result of its retaliatory actions,” the White House said.
“On the first day, President Trump launched his America First trade policy to make America’s economy great again,” it said.
“More than 75 countries have already joined in negotiating new trade agreements. As a result, individual high tariffs have been suspended for now, except for China, which retaliated,” it added.
“A few months ago, China banned the export of gallium, germanium, antimony and other key high-tech materials with potential military applications to the United States.
“In order to block the supply of key components to automakers, aerospace manufacturers, semiconductor companies and military contractors around the world, China has suspended exports of six rare-earth heavy metals as well as rare-earth magnets.”
The statement did not specify the exact tariff rate China would face, but it indicated that the tariff rate could rise to 245%.
Last Friday, China increased tariffs on imports of US goods to 125%, effectively raising US tariffs on Chinese goods to 145%, and put a 90-day pause on planned tariffs on goods from other countries.
