The much-anticipated ‘Siri Dalada Wandanawa’ – a special exposition of the Sacred Tooth Relic – is set to commence this afternoon (18 April) at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy, marking the first such event in 16 years. Public viewing will begin tomorrow (19 April) and continue until 27 April, from 12.00 noon to 5.30 p.m. daily.

Devotees from across the island have already begun arriving in Kandy, with many seen preparing for the occasion since yesterday (17 April).

Today’s inaugural exposition will take place from 3.00 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. at the sacred temple, with three new access routes introduced to manage the anticipated influx of worshippers. These include:

  • Entry from D. S. Senanayake Veediya to the Temple entrance
  • Access from Ratubokkuwa via Sangharaja Mawatha to the main entrance
  • Entry from Ratubokkuwa through temple grounds to the main entrance

An extensive security and traffic plan has been rolled out by Sri Lanka Police, including public searches, roadblocks, and restricted vehicular access to Kandy city to ease congestion. Special parking zones have also been designated for vehicles arriving from outside areas.

Long-distance and city-origin commuter buses will operate as usual, with parking available at Rajapihilla Bus Terminal near the YMBA auditorium and Bogambara Stadium. However, short-distance buses will not be allowed to park within city limits.

Alternative routes have been outlined for non-attendee traffic, while the police have urged devotees to avoid bringing offerings such as flowers due to screening delays. The public has also been requested not to carry heavy bags, cameras, or electronic devices into the temple premises.

In support of the event, Sri Lanka Police’s IT Division has launched a dedicated online platform — daladadekma.police.lk — to provide real-time information and assistance to devotees.

Meanwhile, 50 schools in and around Kandy will remain closed from 21 to 25 April due to the exposition.
