Thousands of protesters rallied in Washington and other cities across the US on Saturday to protest President Donald Trump’s policies on deportations, government firings and wars in Gaza and Ukraine.

Outside the White House, protesters carried banners that read “Workers must have power,” “No to the monarchy,” “Stop arming Israel” and “Due process,” media footage showed.

Some protesters chanted in support of immigrants the Trump administration has deported or is seeking to deport, expressing solidarity with people laid off by the federal government and universities that Trump is threatening to defund.

“As Trump and his administration mobilize to use the U.S. deportation machine, we will organize networks and systems of resistance to protect our neighbors,” said one protester at a rally in Lafayette Square near the White House.

Other protesters waved Palestinian flags while wearing keffiyeh scarves, chanted “Free Palestine” and expressed solidarity with Palestinians killed in the Israeli war in Gaza.

Some protesters carried signs expressing support for Ukraine and called on Washington to be more decisive in opposing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine.

Since taking office in January, Trump and his billionaire ally Elon Musk have dismantled the federal government, laying off more than 200,000 workers and trying to dismantle various institutions.

The administration has detained a large number of foreign students and threatened to cut federal funding for universities over diversity, equity and inclusion programs, climate initiatives and pro-Palestinian protests. Rights groups have condemned the policies.

Near the Washington Monument, protesters held banners that read: “Hate never made any nation great” and “Equal rights for all does not mean you have fewer rights.”

Protests were held in New York City and Chicago, among dozens of other locations. It marked the second day of nationwide protests since Trump took office.
