The National People’s Power (NPP) will not be able to claim a majority in most local government bodies at the upcoming election, according to United National Party (UNP) leader and former President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Speaking at an event held today at the UNP headquarters in Sirikotha, Wickremesinghe said that another comfortable victory for the NPP was unlikely in the forthcoming Local Government (LG) election.

He urged UNP candidates to forge alliances with representatives of other opposition parties in order to defeat the NPP.

“The post of chairperson goes to the group with a majority in each LG body. Therefore, it is imperative to initiate discussions and unite various political groups,” the former President stressed.

He also noted that voters now have a clearer understanding of the capabilities of the current NPP-led government and questioned whether the same group that secured victories in the last two elections should be given another chance at the 2025 LG polls.

The event was attended by UNP local government election candidates and senior party members
