A unique nativity scene featuring baby Jesus wrapped in a keffiyeh was unveiled during Pope Francis’ Nativity Scene and Christmas Tree inauguration on Saturday (7 December) in St. Peter’s Square.

The piece, titled “Nativity of Bethlehem 2024,” was designed by Bethlehem artists Johny Andonia and Faten Nastas Mitwasi. The central structure, nearly 10 feet tall, includes shelves showcasing various nativity scenes.

During the unveiling, Pope Francis said the scene serves as a poignant reminder of those enduring the “tragedy of war in the Holy Land and other parts of the world.” He passionately urged, “Enough with wars, enough of violence!” while reiterating his condemnation of the arms industry, which he described as one “thriving on war and death.”

The sculpture incorporates olive wood, mother-of-pearl, stone, ceramic, glass, felt, and fabric, symbolizing Bethlehem’s artistic heritage and resilience.

Earlier in November, Pope Francis had urged the global community to investigate whether Israel’s actions in Gaza amounted to genocide. He also criticized Israel’s airstrikes in Lebanon, describing them as actions that “go beyond morality.”
