In an apparent attempt to violate the ceasefire agreement, Pakistani troops on Friday opened fire at several places along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, prompting the Indian Army to retaliate effectively, PTI news agency reported, citing sources.
“Incidents of small arms firing were reported at some places along the Line of Control initiated by Pakistan,” PTI news agency reported, citing an unnamed source.
“The firing was retaliated effectively,” it said.
The incident took place hours before Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi is scheduled to visit Srinagar and Udhampur on Friday. During the visit, he will discuss the situation with senior army commanders and other security agency officials stationed in the Kashmir Valley.
The army chief is scheduled to assess the prevailing security situation and review the recent ceasefire violations by the Pakistani army along the Line of Control, the officials added.
The firing by the Pakistani army comes amid rising tensions between the two sides after the Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 people dead.
Following the Pahalgam attack, India has launched a series of heavy retaliations against Pakistan, accusing it of supporting cross-border terrorism. In a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) on Wednesday, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, India decided to suspend the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, until Pakistan permanently withdraws its support for cross-border terrorist activities.
In addition, India has closed the Joint Attari Checkpoint.
India has declared several officials of the Pakistani High Commission as non-personnel and has advised them to leave the country within a week. It has also cancelled all visas issued under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES), and given 48 hours to Pakistani nationals to leave India.
