Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa says he is prepared to take the lead in uniting all forces within the opposition to build a strong, truthful, and people-focused public service.

In a special statement made today, Premadasa expressed his gratitude to the public for supporting the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) despite facing a campaign climate filled with slander, threats, conspiracies, and intimidation. He also extended his respect to all citizens who contributed to strengthening democracy through their vote.

Premadasa noted that the government, which gained large mandates during the recent presidential and parliamentary elections, has suffered a significant decline within just six months. According to him, the local government election results have delivered a clear message from the people — that the opposition must act in unity.

He accused the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) of treating the local elections like a presidential campaign and using religion to influence voters. Despite such tactics, Premadasa said the public had rejected falsehoods and endorsed a sincere and service-driven political path.

“The time has come for all forces in the opposition to unite and answer the people’s call for an honest and powerful public service,” he said, adding that the SJB is ready to provide leadership in this critical responsibility.

He pledged that under a united opposition, the people will receive transparent governance guided by sound policy, democratic values, and a genuine commitment to serve.
