Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasooriya has instructed all Officers-in-Charge (OICs) and senior police officers to conduct special inspections on long-distance passenger buses, especially during night hours.

The Police Media Division stated that this decision was taken in response to a noticeable increase in accidents involving long-distance buses in recent weeks.

According to the instructions issued, police officers are expected to target violations such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, reckless driving, and other dangerous driving behaviours during these inspections.

Teams of officers will be deployed at strategically selected points within police divisions to carry out night-time checks on buses and other vehicles operating on major roads.

Furthermore, members of police motorcycle patrol units have also been directed to monitor the roads for dangerously driven buses and take appropriate legal action where necessary.
