In a statement to Parliament today, Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala addressed ongoing investigations into death threats targeting key political figures, including Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa.

Minister Wijepala revealed that the Prime Minister’s Office received a direct email threat against PM Amarasuriya’s life. “An Additional Secretary of the PM’s Office lodged a formal complaint regarding the email,” he said, adding that an investigation traced the IP address linked to the threat to locations in the Netherlands and Germany. “A detailed report has been requested, and once obtained, the information will be presented in court,” the Minister explained.

The focus then shifted to the threats against Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa. The Minister disclosed that in August 2024, a complaint was made through the ministry’s emergency hotline alleging that an associate of the underworld figure known as ‘Loku Pati’ was planning a sniper attack on Premadasa. However, Minister Wijepala stressed that the investigation found the information to be false and the complaint itself fabricated after tracing the mobile number used.

“While all threats are taken seriously, we must verify each claim thoroughly to separate genuine threats from hoaxes,” Minister Wijepala said.
