Another woman has been arrested in connection with the incident involving a gold-plated T-56 assault rifle that surfaced at a prominent apartment complex in Havelock Town.
The case first came to light yesterday when a 68-year-old woman was taken into custody by Wellawatte Police after allegedly attempting to take the weapon into her residence. A security officer at the complex had alerted authorities upon spotting the woman removing what appeared to be a gold-plated T-56 rifle from the boot of her vehicle.
Security personnel detained the woman and the weapon, and immediately notified police via the 119 emergency hotline.
Wellawatte Police officers responded promptly, conducted a search of the apartment, and arrested the 68-year-old. The rifle, concealed in a bag, was seized as evidence.
Following further investigations, police today confirmed the arrest of another suspect—a 40-year-old woman linked to the case.
The two suspects, residents of Colombo 06 and Battaramulla, are expected to be produced before the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court today (21 May).
Wellawatte Police continue to probe the bizarre incident.
