After a closed-door meeting on the capture of rebels in the capital Damascus and the ouster of President Bashar al-Assad, members of the UN Security Council will work to make a statement on Syria in the coming days.

After the meeting of the 15-member panel, Russian UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told foreign media that “the council was more or less united to protect the territorial integrity and unity of Syria, to ensure the safety of civilians, to ensure humanitarian aid.” needed.”

Syria’s UN ambassador, Koussay Aldahhak, told reporters outside the assembly that his mission and all Syrian embassies abroad had been instructed to continue their work and maintain government institutions during the transition period.

Russia, backed by China, has reportedly defended its ally Assad diplomatically during the war, often upholding a Security Council veto on more than a dozen occasions.

The 15-member council has met several times a month throughout the war to discuss the political and humanitarian situation in Syria and chemical weapons.
