Musical thriller “Emilia Perez” and post-World War II epic “The Brutalist” topped the list of films nominated Monday for the 2025 Golden Globes, the Hollywood honor leading up to the Oscars.

Netflix’s Spanish-language “Emilia Perez” earned 10, while independent distributor A24’s “The Brutalist” earned seven.

Both films will compete for the top Globes honor — best motion picture — against Pope’s Choice story “Conclave,” Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown,” sci-fi epic “Dune: Part Two,” historical drama “Nickel Boys” and “September 5,” the story of sports journalists covering a hostage crisis at the Olympics.

Box office smash “Wicked,” adapted from a long-running Broadway play about the wizards of “The Wizard of Oz,” earned four nominations. It faces dark romantic comedy “Anora” and others in the Best Picture Musical or Comedy category.

Globe nominations can help films qualify for the Academy Awards in March. Last year’s Hollywood strike disrupted this year’s release schedule, and awards pundits say there is no clear front-runner for best picture at the Oscars.

The Globes’ winners are chosen by 334 entertainment journalists from 85 countries, compared to the 9,000 voters who choose the Academy Awards. Organizers have expanded the Globes voting body in recent years, embarking on reforms after criticism of ethical lapses and a lack of diversity.

Comedian Nikki Glaser will host the Globes for the first time on January 5. A boozier and more free-wheeling occasion than the Oscars in the past, the show will be broadcast live on CBS and streamed on Paramount+.

“Emilia Perez” plays a lawyer who helps a drug lord (Spanish actor Karla Sofía Gascón) deal with his death and transition from male to female. Selena Gomez stars as the cartel leader’s wife. All three were nominated for acting honors by Globes voters.

Streaming service Netflix, which only offers a limited run in theaters and has never won the prestigious Best Picture Oscar, beat out traditional studios to earn 13 movie nominations from Globe voters. The company also beat rivals in Globe TV nods by 23.

“It’s a reminder of how dominant the streaming platform is,” said Michael Schneider, television editor at Hollywood publication Variety.

Adrien Brody, a Globe-nominated actor in “The Brutalist,” rebuilds his life in the United States in an epic tale of a Hungarian immigrant fleeing the horrors of World War II.

“Wicked” stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande also received acting nominations, while Angelina Jolie portrayed opera singer Maria Callas in “Maria” and Zendaya as sports romance “Challengers.”

Timothee Chalamet won the nod for his portrayal of the “total unknown” music legend Dylan, as did co-star Edward Norton, who plays folk singer Pete Seeger.

Sebastian Stan was nominated for his role as President-elect Donald Trump in “The Apprentice” alongside Jeremy Strong, who played Trump lawyer Roy Cohn. Trump called the film a “politically disgusting work of art.”

In television categories, the restaurant story “Bear” received five nominations. Mystery comedy “Murder Only in the Building” and historical epic “Shogun” earned four each.
