Prisons Commissioner Gamini B. Dissanayake has reportedly resigned from his role as the Prisons Media Spokesman, submitting his resignation to the Acting Commissioner General of Prisons.

The resignation comes in the wake of the controversy surrounding the unlawful release of an inmate from Anuradhapura Prison under the Presidential Pardon granted for Vesak Poya.

Amid this incident, the government has turned its attention to restructuring the Department of Prisons, with several changes expected in the appointments of Prison Superintendents islandwide.

Following the suspension of Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya, Additional Secretary to the Ministry of Justice, Nishan Dhanasinghe, was appointed as Acting Commissioner General of Prisons.

Meanwhile, Prisons Commissioner Jagath Weerasinghe has been named the new Media Spokesman for the Department of Prisons.
