A group of opposition MPs, including Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa and Chief Opposition Whip Gayantha Karunatileka, walked out of Parliament in protest after the Speaker declined their request to debate the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran and its potential impact on Sri Lanka’s economy.

During the discussion, Chief Government Whip Minister Nalinda Jayatissa said that members had opportunities to raise the matter under Rule 27(2), but chose not to do so. “The war did not start last night or this morning. The Leader of the Opposition could have raised this today, and there were two opportunities for him to do that. Furthermore, Kurunegala District MP Geetha Herath raised a question on the conflict at the time of adjourning the House. So there’s a way to bring up these issues. We do not approve of this kind of disruptive behaviour. Let’s maintain the dignity of Parliament.”

Premadasa insisted the opposition was attempting to highlight a matter of national urgency. “We tried to raise a nationally important issue. Please give us a chance to do that. The conflict between Israel and Iran is escalating, with a serious risk of turning into a nuclear conflict. Between 100,000 and 200,000 Sri Lankans are currently living and working in Israel — their safety is a major concern. The government should already make a statement to the country about the measures it is taking. Furthermore, this conflict could affect our industrial base, export sectors, and oil prices. We’re not just talking nonsense — we’re addressing an issue that directly impacts the country.”

Chief Opposition Whip Gayantha Karunatileka supported Premadasa’s view, stating: “We are not people who talk nonsense; we are attempting to raise a matter of great significance. The opposition is asking whether the government is prepared and what its plans are in view of this developing crisis.”

MP Nalinda Jayatissa responded: “When the answer to the question is presented at the time of adjourning the House today, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will provide a response. There’s no rule stating it must be delivered at this moment. Please remain in the chamber and listen to it when the answer is presented.”
