The Police have announced that the nationwide operation to remove unauthorised and modified vehicle accessories will resume on 1 July.

Director of Traffic Control and Road Safety, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) H.A.K.A. Indika Hapugoda, stated that the crackdown will target illegally installed equipment such as high-intensity LED lights, loud sound systems, and metal rods.

DIG Hapugoda explained that many road accident victims suffer severe injuries due to the presence of such unauthorised equipment, as observed in several recent incidents.

According to the Motor Traffic Department, 8,788 vehicles deemed unfit for road use were identified in 2024 alone. DIG Hapugoda noted that accidents continue to occur due to such unroadworthy vehicles being operated on public roads.

He further emphasised that regardless of objections or resistance, the police are committed to removing all illegal modifications from vehicles in the interest of public safety.
