Twenty-two students from the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka have been suspended in connection with a disturbing ragging incident involving first-year undergraduates.

The suspension was imposed after a group of second-year students from the Faculty of Engineering allegedly subjected newcomers to degrading and inhumane treatment.

Registrar M.I. Naufer stated that the university has launched an internal investigation, with a committee of academic staff appointed to probe the incident thoroughly.

Public outrage was sparked after a video of the ragging session surfaced on social media, prompting the university to take immediate disciplinary action.

Meanwhile, the Akkaraipattu Police have also begun a formal investigation into the incident.
