“I Have a Conscience” – Mahinda Jayasinghe Explains Why He Refused to Present Award to Hayeshika

Deputy Minister of Labour Mahinda Jayasinghe, who attended the recent Asia Miracle Awards ceremony as a special guest, declined to present an award to Hayeshika Fernando, who had been selected to receive the title of “Best Grade 5 Scholarship Teacher.”

The award, which was to be presented during a segment where Jayasinghe was on stage handing out honours, was instead given to Fernando by another individual who was nearby at the time.

Hayeshika Fernando, who has gained public attention in recent months due to several controversial incidents—including allegations involving the assault of a young boy’s testicles and her subsequent disappearance—was also presented with another accolade during the event: “Most Popular Teacher.” That award was presented without issue by veteran broadcaster Sudath Rohana, who was also on stage.

Commenting on his decision, Deputy Minister Mahinda Jayasinghe stated:

“I have no personal issues with her. That was the first time I ever met her in person. I was actually a bit surprised when I saw she had been invited. There are about 260,000 teachers and principals in this country. Among all of them, is she really the best? My conscience simply did not allow me to present such an award. So, I very humbly declined to do so.”
