The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) will launch the ‘Anti-Pyramid National Awareness Week’ from tomorrow, 14 July, in an effort to educate the public on the dangers of illegal pyramid schemes.

Organised by the CBSL’s Financial Consumer Relations Department, the campaign will run until 18 July under the theme “Pyramid is a trap – don’t get into the wrong track.” The initiative aims to raise island-wide awareness about the deceptive nature of pyramid schemes and the financial risks they pose—not just to individuals, but to the broader economy.

The awareness drive targets a wide audience including schoolchildren, teachers, Tri-Forces personnel, Civil Security Department staff, police officers, government employees and the general public.

CBSL said the outreach will cover 6,172 schools and 14,022 Grama Niladhari divisions, ensuring widespread grassroots engagement. Participants will be educated on legal provisions surrounding pyramid schemes, their manipulative structures, and the often devastating personal and financial consequences faced by victims.

Real-life victim testimonies will be shared to highlight the severity of the issue.

A multi-platform media strategy will support the campaign, incorporating newspaper advertisements, social media content, posters, live-streams, TV and radio programmes, news tickers, and public seminars across the country.

The Central Bank urges all citizens to actively take part in the campaign and stay informed. It emphasised that public awareness and vigilance are essential to safeguarding individuals from fraud and maintaining trust in the financial system.
