A youth has been arrested for allegedly luring a schoolgirl and keeping her at a house in Haputale, according to Lindula Police.

The suspect had reportedly developed a romantic relationship with the 15-year-old girl through Facebook. He had instructed her to meet him at the Nanu Oya railway station on 15 July. The girl had left home without informing her family and travelled to the station, from where the suspect is said to have taken her by train to Haputale.

Police stated that the girl’s mother is currently employed overseas as a domestic worker. Her father lodged a complaint with the Lidula Police upon discovering her absence.

Acting promptly on the complaint, Officer-in-Charge of the Lindula Police, Palitha Nandasiri, initiated an investigation. Using the girl’s mobile phone number, officers traced her location. Acting on the instructions of Senior Superintendent of Police for Nuwara Eliya, Anuruddha Hakmana, police officers travelled to Haputale and arrested the youth along with the schoolgirl.
