The driver of a crane involved in a deadly crash at the Kanatte Junction in Borella early this morning (28) has tested positive for cannabis, authorities confirmed following a medical examination.

The accident occurred when the crane, travelling from Rajagiriya towards Bauddhaloka Mawatha, veered off near the Kanatte roundabout and crashed into six motorcycles and three cars that were parked near a traffic signal.

One person—a 62-year-old man from the Athurugiriya area—died while being rushed to the Colombo National Hospital. Seven others were injured and are currently receiving treatment, according to Deputy Director of the hospital, Dr Rukshan Bellana. Among the injured are two women and five men.

The crane driver has been taken into police custody. Initial police investigations suggest the crash may have been caused by brake failure, although this is yet to be officially confirmed. Borella Police are continuing further inquiries.
