SLPP National Organiser Namal Rajapaksa has accused the government of politicising the National Youth Services Council (NYSC) and suppressing independent youth activism, following the arrest of a district youth leader.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Rajapaksa condemned the arrest of Poorna Sathyajith, former Chairman of the Kalutara District Youth Federation, who was allegedly detained for opposing the government’s move. He described the arrest as “a clear act of oppression.”

“We strongly condemn the government’s act of politicising the National Youth Services Council, which is a huge blow to the overall youth population in the country,” he stated.

Calling the incident “not just an attack on one individual but an assault on independent youth leadership in Sri Lanka,” Namal Rajapaksa urged the government to refrain from interfering in civil society and youth institutions.

“We strongly urge the government to stop politicising civil society and independent organisations including youth councils, in order to maintain democracy and a fair and just system,” he added.
