Member of Parliament and Sarvajana Balaya leader Dilith Jayaweera stated that he stands firmly against dynastic politics and that his past support for former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa stemmed from that belief.

He made these remarks while attending the establishment of a Sarvajana Sabha (People’s Council) in the Hapitigama division of the Mirigama electorate, Gampaha District.

“We entered politics with a clear purpose. We don’t have another career or profession—we came into politics not to gain anything, but to fulfill a responsibility,” Jayaweera said.

Reflecting on his political journey, he added, “During the last general election, we told the people that we seek to act as an honest, fearless opposition, representing the voice of the public in Parliament, engaging with society, and constructively supporting the government when it does what is right. Our aim is not to oppose everything blindly, like some parties do.”

Dilith Jayaweera emphasized his opposition to the kind of family politics that has dominated the country in recent decades.

“I have always stood against corruption and the idea of passing political power from father to son. That’s why I supported bringing Gotabaya Rajapaksa into politics. At the time, he stood out for his disciplined, no-nonsense approach—removing excess security, refusing to hang his portraits in government offices, and making efforts to genuinely deliver on promises that others used as mere slogans.”

Dilith Jayaweera concluded by reaffirming that his political vision is rooted in accountability, people-centered governance, and moving away from entrenched political family dynasties.
